As another "eventful" week passes by in Sydney Australia I often quote to myself that famous Danny Glover line "I'm getting to old for this sh*t". My week got off to a bad start after learning the shocking news that someone back home used my identity to get themselves out of trouble, things from there got from bad to worse as I came home from work on Friday to find no electricity in my room whatsoever. Now I can really say that I'm living the life of a rap star in my "One Room Shack"...words taken from popular hip hop classic "Juicy" by Biggie Smalls. To add further insult to injury the soonest time the landlord could tend to the problem was within 2 hours and with me just buying a week's worth of refridgerated food it meant that I had a couple of hours spare to consume a fridge load of groceries to ensure it doesn't go to waste (not as easy as you think!). With this being said it gave me the chance to meet and greet my fellow housemates which turned out to be quite a blessing in disguise and a cultural lesson at the same time. Little did I know that I had a black housemate living next to me the whole time (how did he get here?!?) amongst the French, German and Swedish contingent sharing this "ghost" house of doom.
Earlier that day I got the chance to meet American rapper "Jeru The Damaja". Truth be told, before I met him I didn't know who he was or what material he had previously released but with the audience he had gathered to see him and the amount of hype he had surrounding his arrival in Australia I thought it would be foolish to turn down this free opportunity to meet him in the flesh. After getting my picture taken with him and speaking to him briefly he seems to be a very down to earth kind of guy and happy to be given the opportunity to return to a place he considers "his home away from home".
Judging by Friday's events my week had hit it's peak as not only did I take a positive step in the right direction in my quest to present on air on Australian radio but I also got to see Musiq Soulchild perform....wait for it....FOR FREE (Everyone loves a freebie right?!?). During my stint at 2SER radio last Friday I was given the opportunity to panel on the show which is definitely an upgrade from choosing the music right?!? Anyways, after completing the show I later went onto find out that the shows podcasts received over 1500 hits...magic touch maybe?!?...who knows?!?. Leading onto the concert and it's all quite strange and spontaneous of me how this classic "hook up" came about. Feeling quite down after the weeks event and it being a Friday I wanted to "let my hair down" (of what little I have left of it anyway) I remembered seeing these Musiq Soulchild posters plastered all over Sydney's CBD lamp posts so me being me I decided to put it out there via Facebook to see if anybody had a tickets going spare for the show. Little did I know that my prayers were being answered by the legendary Travis (thanks bro!) who knew of the right people to not only get us in the door of the concert but the afterparty as well....(now that's what I'm talking about!!!). Not only did I get to try out the worlds best dumplings at Din Tai Fung (they were AMA-ZING! by the way!!) but I got to stand right at the front of the concert to see Musiq perform...and when I say right at the front I mean the guy was literally spitting on me the whole night through every song.....it's ok I had a face cloth and some anti bacterial spray with me people so we're cool. In all seriousness though the guy has talent especially with the ladies with alot of them busting a gut just to touch his hand whilst others gazed at his presence lip syncing his lyrics.....(oh to be that guy!)
After be being spurred on by the week's events, Saturday saw me and my fellow housemates to be view some of the best and worse (and I mean worse) properties in and around the city of Sydney. Where one of the properties overlooked the beautiful scenery of the city and the Anzac Bridge other places had resembled a jail cell and with spongy floors and had a whole in the floor which was labelled as a "onsuite bathroom"....are you kidding me?!? Funny enough it was the "Ghetto Fabolous" apartment that was first to snapped up off the market......god help who ends up living there!!!
After another sensible night in on Saturday, Sunday definitely made up for it. At work marked the return of another monthly football (soccer) tournament where locals and regulars of the centres got given the chance to showcase their skills and pump up their ego's in the hope of winning a cash prize of $1,000 dollars. With this always comes a knock on effect to yours truly as I had to referee the whole tournament much to my delight and ear bashing at the same time. Quizzed on my eye sight, judgement and knowledge of the game for most of the afternoon I finally got to see why officials put themselves through this experience on a weekly basis....(erm....the money?!?). Swiftly moving on to the lord's house where theres never a dull moment. This week marred the absence of big momma and crazy phone guy who were replaced by the Collection Box Cheat and Mother Tulisa. I've already made my thoughts known about the lengths churches go through to collect money from people to praise the lord but when I seen a fellow "worshipper" take change from the collection box in exchange for his offering my man had sunk to a new low. This was then followed by spiritual healer who decided to plant her hands on my forehead in hope of curing my headache gained from my footballing woes earlier that morning. When questioned by Mother T if it had worked I smiled and thanked her for her efforts. Little did she know my pain had spread from my head to my heart from what I had witnessed earlier on that night.
I would get onto this week's events but my internet time is running low and I ain't got no spare change to top it up so with that being said I'll leave you guys with this message...."Treat People How You Would Want To Be Treated". I find that if you treat people badly or undermine them in anyway don't be surprised if the favour is returned in due course. On the other hand, if you treat people with respect and the honesty they deserve then I guarantee you will have a friend for life and an alibi when things go horribly wrong!
Until next time peeps
Peace out
Forde Esq.
